Sometimes we just feel stuck in a rut, wondering if things will ever change. And hardly anyone feels there is  NO room in their life for self-improvement. Those of us in recovery also know that it’s all about progress, not perfection. Yet, the human desire to improve has spawned a whole industry of full of frustratingly bad hacks. Diets. Expensive exercise equipment. Seminars and books. In fact, the whole self-improvement concept has become something of a joke.

Still, there is one simple thing that always works when we’re feeling stuck: take an action. It’s the feeling of languishing that’s so bad for our happiness. The action we take doesn’t have to be monumental. It just has to be a step forward. The writer Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “Unless you try to do something beyond what you have already mastered, you will never grow.” So, with this new year on our hands, why not resolve to change a few things in 2023?

  • For example, if your spelling or vocabulary could use work, there are email services that help us Learn a Word a Day for free.
  • Or you could take an online course to learn something new. Here are some free ones.
  • We can all read more. Afterall, there’s more to life than work, social media, and Netflix. Here’s a list of the top 40 books of all time
  • Eat healthier. With so many unhealthy options out there, it can be challenging to eat the right things. Bad diets have a massive impact on our happiness, wellbeing, and success and what we consume can heal us or hurt us. Now is a good time to learn about good nutrition.
  • Evaluate what isn’t working and eliminate those habits. We all know that insanity is defined as doing the same thing repeatedly and expecting a different result. Instead, make a list of what isn’t working in your liege and make the necessary improvements.
