It seems that everyone is — or wants to be — an influencer. In the last decade, social media has stormed our lives, bringing with it new trends, innovative products, adorable pet videos, and, of course, influencers. Technically, a social media influencer is some who has: the power to affect the decisions of others because of his or her authority, knowledge, position, or relationship with his or her audience. In other words, their “brand” is influential.

Yet, brands are not limited to influencers, celebrities and businesses. They are for individuals, too. Your brand is what people visualize when they hear your name or see you. Your brand is at work whenever you go to an interview or make a new connection. That brand can define your success, so why not work on how the world sees you? Here are some ways:

Figure out who you are. This may sound strange, but we should know ourselves. In our fast-moving world, many of us forget to take the time to reflect and focus on who we are and what we really want to be. Grab a sheet of paper and write down the answers to the following:

  • What do I struggle with?
  • What drives me?
  • What kind of tasks drain my energy?
  • What do people compliment me on?

Think about how you want to be known. Once you’ve worked out who you are today, you can start to focus on who you want to be tomorrow. Try not to focus too much on the things you want in life, but on the habits required to be the person who gets those things – things like respect, loyalty, love, and success.

Define your niche. Your goal should never be to try and please everyone – that’s a waste of energy and resources. Instead, focus your efforts on becoming what you want to be: dependable, considerate, kind, compassionate, or sober and thriving.

Represent your brand. Whoever you want to be – get up in the morning and represent that. If you work or go to school, go looking put together and successful. Create a healthy vibe; project quiet confidence. Be kind and cooperate with those around you. When people think of you, they should immediately know your brand from how you look, act, and respond.
